Our Story

A little bit about us

We're Jeff and Claire.

A few years ago, we found ourselves asking a simple question: were we making the most of the time we had?

On paper, life looked great. We had stable careers, a beautiful home, and all the things we had spent years working toward. But we found ourselves wanting something more: more experiences, more adventure, and more opportunities to see the world.

Rather than waiting for retirement, we decided to pursue that dream now.

What started as a goal to explore the US East Coast, Bahamas, and Caribbean by sailboat quickly became much more. Along the way, we've sailed thousands of nautical miles, discovered incredible destinations, met amazing people, and learned far more than we ever expected about sailing, travel, and ourselves.

Today, Sailing Nara is our way of sharing those experiences with others.

You'll find stories from offshore passages, hidden anchorages, coastal towns, boat projects, lessons learned, and the many adventures that happen when you choose a different path.

Whether you're a sailor, a traveler, or simply someone dreaming about a future adventure of your own, we're happy you're here.

Jeff

About Jeff

Jeff has always been drawn to adventure and the idea of exploring by boat, even before he knew much about sailing.

Today he's the one planning routes, trimming sails, tackling boat projects, and researching the next destination.

Whether it's finding the best anchorage, solving a mechanical challenge, tracking down a great local restaurant, or uncovering a hidden local gem, Jeff is always looking for ways to make the next adventure even better.

Claire de Jong

About Claire

Claire grew up in Australia, spending countless hours at the beach and developing a lifelong connection to the water.

She dreamed of traveling the world once her daughter was grown. She imagined road trips through Europe, staying in small towns, and immersing herself in new cultures along the way.

Life had other plans.

That dream eventually took shape in the form of a sailboat, and what began as a completely unfamiliar world became one of the greatest adventures of her life.

IN THE END… We only regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.
